Block Retaining Wall

A block retaining wall lives or dies on the part you never see again once it's built. We dig below frost, lay six inches of compacted crushed stone, and bury the entire first course so the wall has something to lean into when February does its thing. Then the retaining wall drainage: perforated pipe running to daylight, a foot of clean three quarter inch stone behind the block, filter fabric between that stone and the soil so it doesn't silt up in three winters. Skip it and water pressure bellies the middle out like a bad fence on Broad Street.

Concrete Block Retaining Wall

A concrete block retaining wall is the workhorse of this trade, and most of the ones we build in Providence start with six inches of compacted crushed stone under the first course, not dirt somebody raked flat with a shovel. Get that wrong and the whole thing telegraphs it by the second winter. We back every wall with washed stone and a perforated pipe daylighted out the low end, because retaining wall drainage is what actually holds the hill, not the block. You can see the skipped version all over the East Side: an old cinder block retaining wall with no drain, bellied out and weeping salt. Height, access for the machine, and whether it carries a driveway retaining wall load are what move the number. Interlocking Retaining Wall Blocks

Interlocking retaining wall blocks are the ones with a lip or pin cast into the back, so each course locks into the one under it and the wall leans into the hill instead of out toward your patio. Grown-up Lego, basically, and just as unforgiving if the bottom row is off. We dig out, compact six inches of three-quarter inch crushed stone, and then spend the longest stretch of the day getting that base course dead level, because a quarter inch of wobble down there is three inches of crooked by the fifth course. Behind the interlocking concrete block goes clean stone and perforated pipe run out to daylight, since retaining wall drainage is what stops February from shoving the face out. Most of these take our crew at Providence Concrete Company three to five days, caps glued last.

Gabion Wall

A gabion wall is a stack of galvanized steel mesh baskets packed with stone, and it earns its keep where a poured concrete wall would fight the water instead of letting it through. Drainage is free, since the whole face breathes. We use PVC-coated mesh anywhere near salt air off the bay, because bare zinc gives up early around here, and we hand-pack the visible faces with 4 to 8 inch angular stone rather than dumping rounded river rock that rolls loose by the second winter. Internal bracing wires stop the bellying you see on baskets somebody filled in a hurry.

A 30 foot run at three feet tall usually takes us two or three days. Stone choice, wall height, mesh coating and how close a truck can get all move the number, and Providence Concrete Company can also tie gabions into low planter walls along the same grade.

Cement Retaining Wall

A cement retaining wall is what most people picture when they call: one solid gray face holding a hillside back, no joints, no stair steps. Providence Concrete Company digs the footing below the frost line, which around here means about three and a half feet, because a wall sitting on eight inches of topsoil will lean out on you by its third February. Rebar on twelve inch centers, forms, then a pour that we keep damp while it cures.

Drainage is where these fail, not strength. Crushed stone behind the stem, perforated pipe out to daylight, weep holes through the face, fabric so the stone doesn't silt up. Water pushes harder than dirt ever will.

Height, length, footing depth and whether a truck can reach the back yard are what move a cement wall's price.

Rockery Wall

A rockery wall is the one job where the material shows up on a truck looking like it came out of the ground down the street, because in Rhode Island it usually did. We set quarried granite boulders, generally two to four feet across, in a keyed trench about a foot below grade, each course battered back into the slope so gravity works for us instead of against us. Behind that goes clean drain rock and filter fabric.

Skip the drainage and the March thaw pushes the whole face out like a slow motion bowling ball. We've reset plenty of those at Providence Concrete Company.

Boulder size, access for the excavator and how much slope you're trying to retain move the price more than anything. Steep back yards off Neutaconkanut Hill are a different animal than a flat side yard.

Concrete Wall

A poured concrete wall is what I put in when the grade is steep, the soil stays wet, and there's no room to step blocks back into the hill. We dig a footing below the frost line, tie rebar both ways, set forms, and pour in one shot so there's no cold joint for water to sneak through. Drainage is the part that gets skipped by fast crews: washed stone behind the wall, perforated pipe, weep holes. Leave that out and your handsome poured concrete retaining wall is leaning at you by the third March thaw, and no amount of paint fixes a lean.

Block Wall Blocks

Block wall blocks aren't all one animal, and picking the wrong one is how a wall ends up leaning into your neighbor's hydrangeas. Small segmental units run around 75 pounds apiece, and two of us can hand-carry them down a tight Federal Hill side yard where no machine fits. The big units, roughly two feet by two by four, weigh better than a ton and need an excavator with room to swing. Every course steps back about an inch, cores and the first foot behind get 3/4 inch clean stone, and caps go on with concrete adhesive rather than mortar. Skip that stone and the wall holds water, and February in Rhode Island will find it for you.

Cmu Block Wall

A CMU block wall is the workhorse of the retaining game, and when we build one here at Providence Concrete Company it starts with a footing poured below the frost line, a good three feet down, because Rhode Island winter will lift a shallow one like a bad lawn ornament. Then 8 by 8 by 16 block, vertical #4 rebar in the cells every 32 inches, and grout poured solid where the load lives.

What kills a block wall retaining wall is skipping the back: no gravel, no drain pipe, no weep holes, and the first wet March turns hydrostatic pressure into a bulge you can see from the street.

Height changes everything. Anything over four feet needs engineering, more steel and a wider footing, same as we'd do with poured concrete walls holding a driveway bank.

Stem Walls

Stem walls are the short concrete walls that sit on a footing and carry a slab, a garage floor, or the low side of a sloped lot, and on College Hill grades we pour plenty of them. We dig the footing below the 42 inch frost line, tie vertical rebar at 24 inches on center, form the wall 8 or 10 inches thick, and set the anchor bolts before the mud goes off. The soil side gets damp-proofing and a perforated pipe in washed stone. Skip that and the wall wicks water all winter, and by March you've got efflorescence and a clammy slab.

Footing one day, wall a couple more, backfill after roughly a week of cure. When a driveway retaining wall doubles as the stem wall under a garage, Providence Concrete Company pours them as one so there's no cold joint to leak. Height, thickness and how much ledge we hit drive the price.

Stone Wall Retaining Wall

A stone wall retaining wall is what most people picture when they think of holding back a slope in this part of the world, and on the East Side we build plenty of them, usually as a poured or block core faced in New England fieldstone or granite. The look is colonial. The engineering underneath is not. We dig below frost, which around Providence means getting the base down past that 42-inch line, then build in three-quarter clean stone behind the wall with fabric so the backfill doesn't clog the drainage rock.

Good fences make good neighbors, Frost said, and good walls stay put.

The ones that bulge and spill across a sidewalk are almost always dry-laid straight on dirt with no batter, no drainage, no cap bedding. That's why at Providence Concrete Company we set the tone and the stone from the bottom up.

Geogrid Retaining Wall

A geogrid retaining wall is what we build when the hill is bigger than the block can hold back on its own. Anything over about four feet, or shorter than that with a driveway or a steep yard pushing from above, gets grid rolled out every second or third course and buried in compacted structural fill. Grid length usually runs 60 to 70 percent of the wall height back into the slope, and we compact in six to eight inch lifts as we go. That's the step crews skip, because nobody sees it once it's covered.

Skip it and you get the College Hill special: looks sharp in October, bellies out by the third March once frost has had its turn.

What the job involves

A concrete retaining wall starts well below the part anybody ever sees. We dig the trench, get under the frost line, and compact a base of three quarter inch crushed stone in six inch lifts, because a wall set on soft fill anywhere on the hills around here will lean out on you by the third spring. Then the courses go up dead level, with drainage stone and a perforated pipe behind them so the water running downhill has somewhere to be that isn't inside your wall. Backfill gets compacted as we climb, not dumped in at the end.

Low garden and planter walls usually run two to three days. Taller work with steps, corners and caps takes longer. Plenty of retaining wall contractors treat drainage as an add-on. At Providence Concrete Company it's the whole job.

What it costs

What a concrete retaining wall costs on your property comes down to height, what the soil behind it is doing, and how hard it is to get a machine into your yard.
